Community resistance as Bishramganj Police destroys 4 lakh ganja plants at Ramnagar Puran Pagli Bari

On Sunday 7 December 2025, a Bishramganj Police Station-led joint operation destroyed over 400,000 mature cannabis plants across 32 forest department plots in the Ramnagar Puran Pagli Bari area of Bishalgarh sub-division, Sepahijala district. The operation was led by Bishramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ajit Debbarma with the 1st and 11th Battalions of the Tripura State Rifles, Central Reserve Police Force personnel and women police officers. Over 150 personnel were deployed in plantations hidden inside rubber forests. Officials estimated the destroyed crop at approximately ₹25 crore. Cultivators attempted to obstruct the operation by felling large trees across the road, but the team pushed through and cleared the fields. As destruction proceeded, tribal women cultivators rushed to the site, crying and pleading with officials to spare the plantations, citing dependent daughters of marriageable age, children in residential schools and bedridden family members. One woman collapsed inside the plantation and was revived by other cultivators. Several men attempted to resist with sticks but retreated in the face of the deployment. Officer-in-Charge Ajit Debbarma said operations would continue.
