Naryn is a cannabis growing area in Kyrgyzstan, in Naryn Region in the inner Tian Shan. Cannabis grows wild there, and people also grow it on their own plots. The Kyrgyz national report summarised by the European Union's drugs agency in 2014 names Naryn among five provinces where some 10,000 hectares are overgrown with wild hemp, which local people make into marijuana and hashish.[1] The area belongs to the Tian Shan growing region.
Harvest and cultivation
Martha Brill Olcott and Natalia Udalova, writing in 2000, dated the cannabis season in Naryn province from 15 June to 5 July, the latest of the Kyrgyz provinces they list.[2] Gulzat Botoeva, a sociologist who studied hashish making in Issyk-Kul, cites newspaper reports that people in Talas, Jalal-Abad and Naryn provinces had begun to grow cannabis on their own plots, besides gathering it wild.[3]: 70
Eradication
The police and the local authorities mow and burn the wild stands in summer raids. In the Kara-Kuurai raid of July 2024 the interior ministry gave one figure for Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions together: 27 hectares mowed and 17 tonnes burned.[4] In July 2026 the provincial police reported that about 2 tonnes of wild cannabis had been found and destroyed in Jumgal district.[5] In August the Jumgal district police, the provincial drug police and representatives of the Min-Kush rural district mowed and burned about 2.5 tonnes from some 2 hectares at Marinka and Kindik, which belong to Min-Kush.[6]
