Why Naryn is a growing area
- Three sources name the province as a place where cannabis is harvested or grown. The Kyrgyz national report summarised by the European Union's drugs agency (March 2014) names Naryn among five provinces where local people make wild hemp into marijuana and hashish. Olcott and Udalova (2000, p. 9) give a cannabis season for Naryn province. Botoeva (2016, p. 70) writes that people in Naryn began to grow cannabis on their own plots.
- The area is drawn on the whole province because these sources report the province as a whole. The one district named in the press, Jumgal, appears only in reports of raids on wild stands (2026), which say nothing of gathering by local people.
- The UNODC surveys of 1998–1999 give no figure for Naryn (Illicit drug trends in Central Asia, 2008, p. 23, lists Issyk-Kul, Jalal-Abad, Talas, Chui and Osh).
The name
The bare name goes to the growing area. The province is Naryn Region. A page on the town would be titled Naryn (city), and the river Naryn River.
Growing status
The status is Active. The summary of the national report is dated March 2014, Botoeva's newspaper sources on sown plots date from 2007 and 2013 or 2014, and the raids from 2024 and 2026. No source says that growing has ended.
Extent and border
- The border is a proxy: Naryn Region as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 1251542), about 44,700 km², the figure in the infobox.
- No source gives an area of cannabis for the province alone.
- The infobox point (41.37, 75.6) is the centre of the province. The border is not drawn from accession or news points.
Accessions
The wiki holds no accession from the province.
Sources
- Botoeva (2016): the statement on Naryn rests on newspaper reports, which Botoeva cites as Ismailov (2007) and Vecherniy Bishkek (2013; her bibliography dates the item to 2014). Neither article was found.
- Olcott and Udalova (2000): the sentence giving the seasons by province carries no footnote.
- Kaktus.media (12 July 2024): the interior ministry's figures join Issyk-Kul and Naryn in one line, so no figure for Naryn alone can be taken from it.
- Kaktus.media (20 August 2021): a raid by the drug police for Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions at Tabylgyty, near the Kazakh border, lay in Tyup district of Issyk-Kul Region; it is not used here.
