King 460 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on Po-Hua-Shan (Baihua Shan), in the mountains west of Beijing, China, on 30 August 1936 by T. F. King for the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology, Peiping. The New York Botanical Garden holds a sheet as 01414411,[1] and the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing a second as PE 00557897.[2]
Collection and locality
The printed bilingual label is headed Flora of Hopei and Distributed from Herbarium of Fan Memorial Institute of Biology, Peiping, China (北平靜生生物調查所). It gives the collector T. F. King, the field number 460, the locality Po-Hua-Shan and the date Aug. 1936.[3] A printed tag on the stem, of the Shansi-Chihli Exp. of 1929 with W. Y. Hsia's name, has been reused and numbered by hand K. 460.[3] The catalogue gives the locality as Peiping, Po-Hua-Shan. and the date as August 1936.[1] The Beijing sheet carries a label of the Fan Memorial Institute with the same number, collector, place (Hopei: Po-Hua-Shan) and month, the same reused tag numbered K. 460, and a typed form of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Plant Taxonomy, numbered 00460. The form gives the collector's name stamped in Chinese, 金 and two blurred characters, the date 1936年8月30日 (30 August 1936) and the place 百花山 followed by three blurred characters.[4] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a branched flowering top with open flower clusters.[3] The label names it Cannabis sativa L.; E. Small confirmed the name in August 1975.[3][1] The Beijing sheet carries a male plant with open, branched panicles shedding their flowers.[4] The same collector gathered cannabis at the Temple of Heaven three weeks later: King 686 (1936).
