King 686 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at the Temple of Heaven (天壇) in Peiping (Beijing), China, on 20 September 1936 by T. F. King. The Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing holds the sheet as PE 00557898.

Collection and locality

The sheet carries two labels. A typed form of the herbarium of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Plant Taxonomy, numbered 00686, gives the collector's name stamped in Chinese, 金 and two blurred characters, the date 1936年9月20日 (20 September 1936) and the place 天壇 (the Temple of Heaven). A label of the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology gives the field number 686, the herbarium number 70878, the collector T.F.King, the locality Hopei: Temple of Haver, the last word cut at the sheet's edge, and the date Sep. 20, 1936. A printed tag of the Shansi-Chihli Exp. of 1929, with W. Y. Hsia's name, has been reused and numbered K. 686. The catalogue gives the collector as 金德褔, the number 686, the year 1936 and Beijing.

Specimen and identification

The sheet carries a long leafy branch with palmate leaves and flowers clustered in the leaf axils. Both labels name it Cannabis sativa L., with no determiner. The same collector gathered cannabis on Po-Hua-Shan three weeks earlier: King 460 (1936).
