Faurel s.n., Maison-Carrée is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa credited to Louis Faurel and dated 16 April 1930. Its locality reads Près des dunes de Maison-Carrée, environs d'Alger and its event note reads Terres incultes, so the sheet places the plant on uncultivated ground by the dunes at Maison-Carrée, now El Harrach on the eastern edge of Algiers, in Algeria. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sheet as catalogue P06879996.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 731718197.[2]
Collection and locality
The locality is transcribed as Près des dunes de Maison-Carrée, environs d'Alger and the event note as Terres incultes.[1][2] The date is carried as a full day, 16 April 1930. No altitude or collection number is carried.
Maison-Carrée is El Harrach, a town at the mouth of the Oued El Harrach that is now a district of Algiers, in Algiers Province.[3] A sheet from the agricultural institute in the same town twelve years later, Pasquier s.n., Maison-Carrée (1942), records the opposite condition: a plant raised under glass from Saharan seed.[4]
Louis Faurel lived from 1907 to 1973 and worked on the Algerian flora, so a gathering of 1930 falls inside his working life, in his early twenties.[5]
Specimen and identification
The catalogue records the preparation as a herbarium sheet and the name as Cannabis sativa L., with no determiner named.[1][2] A leaf sample was taken from the sheet in March 2021 for C. J. Grassa at Harvard University, under request 156515, the same sampling that reached Steinheil s.n., Bône (1834).[2] One image of the sheet is published with the occurrence, under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.[2]
