Simonneau s.n., Igli is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa credited to P. Simonneau and dated 29 October 1960. Its locality reads Périmètre d'irrigations d'Igli (Sahara oranais), which places the plant inside an irrigation scheme at Igli on the Oued Saoura, in south-western Algeria. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sheet as catalogue P06879997.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 731718198.[2]
Collection and locality
The label is typed on the printed form of the herbarium of A. Dubuis, HERBIER A. DUBUIS. It reads Cannabis sativa L., var. kif A.DC., Périmètre d'irrigations d'Igli (Sahara oranais), 29 Octobre 1960 and (Leg.: P. Simonneau).[3] The catalogue transcribes the same locality and day.[1][2] No habitat, altitude or collection number is given. A périmètre d'irrigation is a defined irrigated area, so the wording places the plant on watered ground without saying whether it was sown there.
Sahara oranais was the French administrative name for the Saharan territory governed from Oran. Igli lies on the Oued Saoura and is now in Béni Abbès Province.[4]
Specimen and identification
The sheet holds one small plant with its root. The label names it Cannabis sativa L. var. kif A.DC., the variety Alphonse de Candolle gave in 1869 for the cannabis cultivated in Algeria under the names kif and tekrouri.[3][5] The label of Pasquier s.n., Maison-Carrée (1942), on the same Dubuis form, gives the same name. The catalogue records the preparation as a herbarium sheet and the name as Cannabis sativa L., with no determiner named.[1][2] One image of the sheet is published with the occurrence, under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.[2]
