Buchanan-Hamilton 2182 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from the collection of Francis Buchanan-Hamilton. The plant was raised from seed sent from Europe and grown in the botanic garden near Calcutta.[1] A slip on the sheet is dated 21 January 1815.[1] The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248803.[2] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 575339014.[3]
Collection and locality
The printed label reads Herb. Francis (Buchanan) Hamilton, M.D., F.R.S. and records that the herbarium was presented to the University of Edinburgh in 1830. It gives the original number 2182 and states that the name and notes are taken from Dr. H.'s MS. Catalogue.[1] A separate handwritten slip reads H. B. 21 Janry 1815.[1]
The RBGE catalogue gives the collection date as 20 January 1815. It records no country of origin and files the sheet with cultivated material.[2] GBIF gives no date.[3]
Cultivation observation
The note copied from the manuscript catalogue reads e semine ex Europa misso. Colitur in horto prope Calcuttam botanico [from seed sent from Europe; it is grown in the botanic garden near Calcutta].[1]
Specimen and identification
The copied entry names the plant Cannabis sativa, with a reference to Willdenow's Species Plantarum. The slip reads Cannabis sativa ♂, marking the plant as male. The mounted stem carries male flowers.[1] The RBGE catalogue records the sheet as Cannabis sativa L. and describes it as male.[2]
