Evidentiary scope
The sheet records a plant grown in a botanic garden from seed sent from Europe. It documents the garden cultivation of introduced seed. It says nothing about local cultivation, a local variety or plants growing outside the garden. The accession is classified as Other. It does not establish a continuing population, a feral population, a landrace or a living germplasm holding. No conservation priority is assigned.
Georeferencing
The copied catalogue note places the plant in the botanic garden near Calcutta. Buchanan-Hamilton succeeded William Roxburgh as superintendent of that garden in 1814 and left for Britain in 1815 (Royal Asiatic Society archive). The East India Company's garden at Shibpur is now the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah (Botanical Survey of India). The infobox uses that identification: Howrah district, West Bengal. The coordinate is the garden itself in OpenStreetMap (way 52097541), 22.56, 88.29. It is the closest point in the herbarium corpus, because the note names the garden rather than a town, but it still marks the garden and not a bed within it.
Entered under R1 of the coordinate ruling of 18 September 2026, which georeferences a historical accession to the place its label names, at two decimal places, with the mapped object named above. Editorial treatment
The slip reads 21 Janry 1815. The RBGE catalogue gives 20 January 1815. GBIF gives no date. The accession follows the slip.
The RBGE catalogue names no collector. The sheet comes from Buchanan-Hamilton's own herbarium, carries his original number and copies his manuscript catalogue. He was also superintendent of the garden on the slip's date. The accession is therefore titled by his name and number, with F. Buchanan-Hamilton as collector, as Griffith 4686 (by 1845) and Wight s.n. (1821) are for sheets from their collectors' own herbaria. The letters H. B. on the slip are not expanded.
RBGE and GBIF record no country. RBGE files the sheet as cultivated. The country and province fields follow the location of the garden.
The copied entry's reference to Willdenow's Species Plantarum reads IV, 768 as far as the hand can be read; the article does not quote the page. The 1830 presentation to the University of Edinburgh records custody and is not used as a date. The pencilled 369 and 203/82 (5) (Cult) are not interpreted.
