Thomson s.n. is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected by Thomas Thomson in 1847 in the western Himalaya, at Shimla or in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, India. In 2020 John McPartland and Ernest Small designated the sheet in the Gray Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria as the neotype of Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. himalayensis.[1]: 96
Collection and locality
McPartland and Small cite the neotype as gathered by T. Thompson in 1847 in Shimla or Kinnaur, quoting the label's place as Himalaya Boreal. Occident., Regio Temp. (north-west Himalaya, temperate zone).[1]: 96 The Missouri Botanical Garden's Tropicos database, as GBIF publishes it, gives the same collector, year and place, with Himachal Pradesh as the state and no collector's number.[2]
Typification
McPartland and Small raised the variety to its present rank under Cannabis sativa subsp. indica. Its basionym is Cannabis sativa var. hymalaiensis Cazzuola (1875), the spelling corrected under the botanical code. No himalayensis specimen survives in the herbaria of Cazzuola or of Koch, who had used the epithet without a diagnosis in 1854, so they chose a neotype.[1]: 95–96 They designated Thomson's sheet because it represents the best of several collections he made in the Himalaya.[1]: 96
The variety is their South Asian wild-type, with small achenes, a persistent perianth and a protuberant base that lets the achenes fall from the plant.[1]: 96
Duplicates
The gathering was distributed as an exsiccatum, and McPartland and Small name duplicates at four herbaria as isoneotypes: the Natural History Museum in London (BM), the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (K), the Komarov Botanical Institute in St Petersburg (LE) and the Smithsonian Institution's United States National Herbarium (US).[1]: 96 Tropicos records each of the four as an isoneotype, with the same collector, year and place.[3][4][5][6]
Specimen and identification
The paper photographs an achene of the neotype: small and oval, brown, with dark streaks.[1]: 92 The supplementary list of representative specimens gives the neotype at the head of the variety's sheets.[7]: 77
