Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The designating paper places the gathering in Shimla or Kinnaur in 1847 and quotes a label that names only a region and a climatic zone. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation, though the authors treat the variety as a wild-type. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

No holder number is given. The designating paper cites the neotype as (GH) with no barcode, and Tropicos holds it as specimen 103188063 (GBIF 4062110674), which is Tropicos's own record number. Harvard's specimen index lists two Gray Herbarium Cannabis sheets under Thomson: barcode 00449827 (collector J. Thompson, India) and barcode 00449829 (collector J. Thomson, no country). Neither is imaged, neither carries a type status, and the index gives [data not captured] as the locality of both, so which is the neotype is not established. The catalogue number field is left empty.

Label reading

Not read. No image of the neotype sheet is published; the label's place words are quoted as McPartland and Small give them. The infobox image is the paper's photograph of an achene of the neotype (Fig. 3D, 195 × 325 pixels as published).

Georeferencing

No point is given. The designating paper names more than one place, Shimla or Kinnaur, as alternatives, and the label as quoted names only the north-west Himalaya; no source read gives a reason to choose between them. The state, Himachal Pradesh, is over 30,000 km², too large for an area point.

Editorial treatment

Title. No collector's number is cited, so the title takes s.n. and the year the designating paper gives. Thomson's undated Edinburgh sheet Thomson s.n. (by 1878) is a different accession.

Collector. The paper and Tropicos spell the collector T. Thompson. He is Thomas Thomson (1817–1878; IPNI author 10621-1), whose name the printed slips of the Herb. Ind. Or. Hook. fil. & Thomson distribution carry; the collector field takes his full name.

Date and place. The year 1847 and the places Shimla or Kinnaur are the designating paper's and Tropicos's. Whether they are written on the GH label or were inferred from Thomson's itinerary is not stated.

One page for the gathering. The neotype and the four isoneotypes are one gathering by the paper's own statement, so they share this page; the repository is the holder of the neotype.

Sheets with the same printed slip. The Paris herbarium holds Thomson sheets with the printed slip Herb. Ind. Or. Hook. fil. & Thomson filled in Hab. Himal. Bor. Occ. and Regio temp. (P06884265, P06884266, P02443057). P06884266 reads alt. 1–7000 ped. and Coll. T.T. with no date and no number. The slip names a region and an altitude band, not a gathering, so these sheets are not treated as further duplicates of the neotype; the same holds for Edinburgh's Thomson s.n. (by 1878).

Source discrepancies

  • The paper and Tropicos spell the collector Thompson; the printed slips of the distribution read Thomson.
  • Harvard's index gives the initial J. for both of its Thomson sheets.
