Central Lao General Population 2022 is a landrace cannabis accession from Vientiane Province, Laos, listed as Central Lao in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC classifies it as a Lao-Thai ganja landrace.[1] The Real Seed Company offers the line for sale on its Kwik Seeds site (checked 17 October 2026).[2]
Geography
History
According to RSC, until the late 1960s the ganja grown in ethnically Lao northern Isan and in Vientiane Province supplied demand from Vientiane, then the main urban centre of the region. RSC reports that this economy changed rapidly when Western "Hippie Trail" travellers connected farmers in Laos and northern Isan to demand from Europe and the Americas.[1]
Collection Details
The listing gives the sourcing as The Real Seed Company, Laos (2022). RSC states that the seed was collected from the winter 2022/2023 harvest.[1] RSC reports that a retest in summer 2025 gave germination rates of 100 per cent. The Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[3] says the seed comes from the winter 2022 harvest and that its viability may have dropped below 80 per cent.[4]
In August 2026 Angus gave Central Lao seed to the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System. The system holds the seed as accession G 34096 at its Plant Genetic Resources Unit in Geneva, New York.[5][6]
Cultivation Details
RSC states that across the tropics ganja is grown as a six-month crop from seed to harvest, with earlier individuals or lines closer to five months. It lists greenhouse or outdoor growing.[1]

RSC describes a euphoric, positive high, with soaring highs of a feel-good, speedy intensity.[1]
Notes
RSC writes that Western underground brands such as "Thai Stick" give the wrong idea that there is a single strain, while Central Laos in particular still holds ganja domesticates of highly diverse morphology, aroma and effect. It considers ganja most closely associated with the ethnic Lao in both Laos and Thailand. It suggests that "Lao Stick" would have been a more accurate underground brand name.[1]
In a November 2025 blog post RSC writes that people in Laos and Thailand call cannabis sa or gancha.[9]
