Mae Chan is a historical cannabis growing area in Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai Province, in the Northern Thailand growing region. At Ban Huai Kang Pla, a hill village in Pa Tueng subdistrict, households once grew cannabis among the vegetables they ate.[1]

Geography

Ban Huai Kang Pla is village no. 15 of Pa Tueng subdistrict, at 614 m in the Doi Bo National Forest Reserve, on Highway 1089 from Mae Chan to Fang, about 48 km from Chiang Rai town. Mien who came from Laos founded the village around 1954, under the name Ban Huai Hia; it took its present name in 1966. Akha, Lahu, Lisu and Lua households later settled around it.[1]

Cultivation

The villagers once lived by shifting cultivation of maize and upland rice and by raising pigs, chickens, horses, cattle and buffalo. For their own table they grew tomatoes, cabbage, opium, cannabis, chillies and coriander. The Highland Research and Development Institute took the village into its programme in 2016; the community's main problems were then forest clearing, a lack of other livelihoods and heavy use of farm chemicals.[1]
