Highland Lao General Population 2019 is a landrace cannabis accession from Bolikhamsai Province, Laos, which The Real Seed Company (RSC) sold as Highland Lao from December 2019.[1][2] RSC described it as a pure Lao landrace from the highlands of Laos, obtained from farmers in Bolikhamsai.[2] RSC later sold further Bolikhamsai accessions under numbered names, and its listing for Highland Lao #2 stated that that seed did not come from the same farmer as this accession.[3]
Geography
RSC wrote that the accession was collected in the mountains of Bolikhamsai Province, in central Laos, and gave a latitude of about 18° N;[2] versions of the listing from May 2022 say the highlands of Bolikhamsai instead.[4] Neither RSC nor the Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[5] names a district or a village.[2][6]
History
According to RSC, large-scale commercial cultivation had moved into this region because of crackdowns on production along the Mekong in lowland Laos and in neighbouring Isan, which it calls the historic centres of "Thai" ganja production.[2][7] From October 2022 the listing added that both regions are predominantly ethnically Lao.[8]
Collection Details
Both shops gave the sourcing as The Real Seed Company, Laos, Southeast Asia, Winter 2019, in every version that offered the line.[2][6] RSC stated that the accession was obtained from Lao farmers in Bolikhamsai who cultivate for the Thai market, and that the seeds came from the season's earliest harvested plants, which were taken down at the end of October.[2] Neither shop names the farmers.[2][6]
RSC announced the seed on 3 December 2019, with Lao Village Landrace, as two Lao landraces new in stock, describing Bolikhamsai as home to much commercial production for export to Thailand.[1] Kwik Seeds carried the same announcement two days later.[9] RSC's listing is archived with the Winter 2019 sourcing until March 2024, and Kwik Seeds' until March 2023.[10][11]
Cultivation Details
RSC gave the purpose as ganja, which it glosses as seedless or lightly seeded buds, and listed greenhouse or outdoor growing.[2] Both shops gave the regional harvest as December to January;[2][11] from October 2022 RSC's listing gave "Seed to harvest 6 months" in its place.[8] RSC wrote that typical Lao and Thai ganja landraces take six months from seed to harvest, and that farmers in mainland Southeast Asia follow two main cycles: sowing in June or July for a harvest in December or January, or sowing in August or September for a harvest in February or March.[2]
Botanical Characteristics
Both shops gave a height of 2 to 4 metres and a Sativa-type architecture.[2][6] From August 2020 RSC classified the line as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. indica; Kwik Seeds' listing gives no classification.[7][11] RSC's genetics line read "Pure Lao – Thai Landrace Strain" in December 2019, "Lao – Thai Landrace" from August 2020, and "Traditional Lao – Thai Ganja Domesticate" from April 2021; Kwik Seeds moved from the first wording to the third.[2][7][12][6][11] From May 2022 RSC quoted an indoor grower who reported that the plants turned purple naturally, without cold weather.[4]
Aroma
Both shops described fruity, peppery and musky aromas, RSC until May 2022 and Kwik Seeds throughout.[4][11] From October 2022 RSC described the aromas as musky, spicy and strongly citrus.[8]
Effects
From May 2022 RSC quoted the indoor grower's description of the high as "100% cerebral deep space exploration", without anxiety or paranoia.[4]
