Kumaoni General Population 2024 is a landrace cannabis accession from Kumaon, Uttarakhand, India, listed as Kumaoni in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC classifies it as a Himalayan multipurpose cannabis landrace, cultivated for fibre, seed and hand-rubbed charas.[1]
Geography
RSC describes the landrace as unique to a district of northern Kumaon bordering Tibet, and gives a latitude of about 29° N.[1] The Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[2] places it in a few villages of northern Kumaon bordering Tibet and Nepal.[3] RSC files the line under its Himalaya category, which it describes as covering the ranges of the western Himalaya from central Nepal to Kashmir, a zone it considers distinct for cannabis both culturally and botanically.[4]
History
According to RSC, Kumaon was for several years a part of the Kingdom of Nepal and shares its Himalayan traditions, including cannabis culture.[1] An RSC blog post of December 2025 places this multipurpose landrace type in the Khas or Pahari cultural zone, which it says runs from Kumaon in the Indian Himalaya to Gandaki Province in the Nepali Himalaya, and reaches Himachal Pradesh in the west and the Kathmandu Valley in the east.[5] An RSC post of April 2023 describes Kumaoni as collected from the district of Kumaon in Uttarakhand, a region it considers contiguous with far-western Nepal in cannabis and in culture. The same post reports that Himalayan multipurpose plants grown for fibre can pass four metres on good land, that the bast fibre of Kumaoni landraces cultivated around Almora exceeds that of European hemp, and that the fibre was used for textiles, for shoes and for rope.[6]
Collection Details
The listing gives the sourcing as The Real Seed Company, Northern Kumaon (Winter 2024).[1] Kwik Seeds dates the same collection to winter 2024 and gives the place as the Kumaon Himalaya, India.[3] Neither listing names a village or a farmer. RSC has offered Kumaoni seed as an extra with orders in several years, most recently in December 2025.[5]
Cultivation Details
RSC gives the purposes as hand-rubbed charas, seed and fibre, and the harvest as late September to early November. It lists outdoor or greenhouse growing.[1][3] An RSC post of January 2025 gives the sowing season in a traditional cultivation zone such as Kumaon as about May or June, when midday temperatures in the mountains can reach 30 °C to 35 °C.[7]
Botanical Characteristics
RSC describes vigorous, hardy plants with resinous inflorescences, long internodes and the loose, resinous buds of traditional Himalayan landraces, in green and purple colours. It reports that plants grow very tall given space, that the majority can be expected to show moderate to high levels of CBD, and that Himalayan landraces exist as part of crop and weed complexes, so that some plants may show wild-type characteristics.[1] RSC gives a height of up to 5 metres outdoors and Kwik Seeds 2 to 6 metres.[1][3] RSC also files the line under its CBD category, which it describes as covering high-CBD cannabis landraces.[8]
RSC considers the plants hardy and accustomed to intense rain, cold and humidity, and suited to adaptation to northern climates.[1][3]
Charas
RSC describes the charas of Kumaoni domesticates as harder and coarser than the Parvati type, and at its best as giving a luminous, expansive high and an even, long-lasting buzz. It recommends the line to those who value Himalayan charas with an uplifting high such as the Nepali resin familiar from the Hippie Trail era.[1]
Aroma
RSC and Kwik Seeds list floral, citrus and hashy aromas.[1][3]
