Falakata is an appellation in the Alipurduar growing area of The Dooars, in Alipurduar District, West Bengal, India. It covers the Falakata community development block, less the parts of it in the Jaldapara and Khairbari-Deogaon forests, which hold the seed lots collected in the block.

History

In 1911 Falakata was a village on the east bank of the Mujnai, close to the boundary of Cooch Behar State, and the headquarters of the tahsil of the same name, which took in the country between the Jaldhaka and the Torsa. It had been the headquarters of what became the Alipur Duar subdivision, and its market sold some of the best jute, tobacco and mustard of the Western Duars.[1]: 149 The tract round the Dhupguri police outpost was tried at Jalpaiguri but paid its revenue through the Falakata tahsil.[1]: 124

This Falakata is a different place from Ambari Falakata, the small tahsil west of the Teesta that the gazetteer calls the Bengal Duars.[1]: 124

Trafficking

Falakata police seized 43 kg of ganja from a vehicle at a hotel on Madari Road in September 2024[2] and 42.3 kg from a Cooch Behar to Siliguri bus at Dulaldokan in March 2025.[3] No report read so far records cannabis grown in the block outside the forests.
