East Africa Genes is a cannabis seed seller whose website, eastafricagenes.blog, offers lines it describes as landrace sativas from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, Angola, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.[1] The seller says the business was launched in 2020. Its operator wrote in 2022 of living in Nairobi.[2][3] Since 2023 it has advertised as a sponsor on the cannabis growers' forum Overgrow, whose members paid for the collecting trips it made to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2024 and to Uganda in 2025.[4][5][6]
History
In February 2020 the seller, posting as Kidete, offered growers on the forums THCFarmer and Rollitup East African seed free of charge.[7][8] The website published its first blog post on 12 March 2020.[9] In August 2020 its About page said that seed was collected in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania "by taking so many road trips around East Africa".[10] Writing on Overgrow in 2023, the seller said East Africa Genes "was launched in 2020 because I love collecting African landrace strains".[2] A blog post of 2022, written in the first person, mentions "Nairobi where I reside".[3] In August 2020 a classified advert on THCFarmer offered strains "from this seedbank known as East Africa Genes",[11] and in December 2020 the free offer was declared over.[12] An Overgrow member was growing its Shashamane line by August 2021 and credited the seed to "east Africa genetics".[13]
The catalogue page, Pure African Strains, listed lines from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in August 2020.[14] By January 2021 it had added a line from Ethiopia and took payment by PayPal or Western Union.[15] By April 2022 it also offered Malawi Gold.[16] From October 2020 to June 2023 the page priced its lines at $50 for 15 seeds.[17][18] In June 2023 the page said that its Kenyan sativas were also available from The Landrace Team;[18] the sentence is not on the current page, which prices packs of 10 or 15 seeds at $60 to $90.[1]
On Overgrow the seller also posts as Kidete. In September 2023 it opened a topic in the forum's Sponsored category to advertise the business,[2] and in 2024 it wrote that it could post adverts because it had "paid for the OG package".[4] It also posts strain reviews on a YouTube channel under the business's name.[1] In September 2024 the seller reported that Instagram had suspended its account.[19]
Lines and their stated origins
The catalogue groups its lines by country and names a place of origin for most of them. For Kenya the current page lists Migori, Kwale, Kisumu, Kambi and Central Kenya sativas.[1] It says farmers in western Kenya mix the Migori line with napier grass and feed it to bulls before bull fights, a story the page has carried since 2020.[14][1] Of Kisumu it says "This is a sativa I’ve being getting consistently since 2018".[1] The line now headed Kwale was headed Mombasa 1 in 2020 and 2021; the page places it in Kwale, near the Tanzanian border.[15][16] From 2020 to 2023 the page also listed an Isibania sativa.[14][18]
The Ugandan lines are Birere, Nimule and Uganda Pressure. The page places Birere near Lake Victoria and Nimule near the border with South Sudan, and says Uganda Pressure is grown around Entebbe by the Baganda.[1] In its Overgrow adverts the seller placed Birere in eastern Uganda in 2023 and in western Uganda, near the Rwandan border, in 2024.[20][21]
From Tanzania it sells Moshi and Kilimanjaro, which it also calls "Elephant Stomper".[2] The seller says the Kilimanjaro seed comes from villages at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro,[22] and the catalogue says the Moshi line came from a Tanzanian friend who buys from growers and carries it across the border.[1]
The Ethiopian line is Shashamane, named for the town in central Ethiopia. The catalogue says its potency and flavours closely resemble those of Lamb's Bread, a Jamaican line.[1][23] A blog post of March 2020 asked whether Shashamane descends from Lamb's Bread seed brought by Rastafari settlers from Jamaica. It left the answer to the reader: "You be the judge."[23]
The Malawian line, headed Malawi Gold in 2022 and 2023 and Malawi on the current page, is said to be "widely grown and smoked around the central and northern districts of Malawi".[16][1] The current page also offers a South African Skunk, an Angolan line and a Masisi-Rutshuru line from the Democratic Republic of the Congo; the last two came from the seller's trips to the Congo.[1]
Collecting trips
From 2024 members of Overgrow paid for trips on which the seller looked for seed, and received a share of what was found. The first, to Kinshasa, was organised on the forum by the member Upstate, who put its cost at just over $3,200 and asked contributors for $200 each.[24][25] The seller announced a flight from Nairobi to Kinshasa for 27 March 2024.[26] It reported that the cannabis sold by dealers in Kinshasa came from northern Angola. It promised each donor 10 seeds of this "Angola sativa" and 10 of the Shashamane.[27][1]
The second trip, to Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, was funded by 30 members at $150 each.[28] The seller booked a flight to Goma for 30 August 2024 and reported two lines, a Masisi sativa of 130 seeds and a Rutshuru sativa.[29][30] Because the Masisi seed was too little to share out, Upstate reproduced it for the donors.[31][32] Accounts of where the Masisi seed came from differ. The seller wrote that a tour guide had told it that cannabis in Goma comes from Masisi, six hours west of the city;[33] Upstate wrote that the seeds were obtained from refugees living on an island near Virunga National Park.[5]
The seller calls the Masisi line the Black African Magic,[34] a name Upstate had used for a Congolese "strain of lore" when raising money for the trip.[28] After germinating the seed, Upstate wrote that whether it was that strain "remains to be seen".[5] When the seller wrote in March 2026 that it was, another member replied "That’s an awful bold statement."[35]
A third trip, to Uganda, was advertised in March 2025 for 30 donors at $80 each.[36] In June 2025 the seller reported two lines, one from Kampala and one from Fort Portal, whose buds yielded 195 seeds.[6] Donors who sent their Fort Portal seed to Upstate for reproduction wrote in August 2026 that none had come back to them.[37][38] In October 2025 the seller announced a trip to Zambia at $140 a place. In August 2026 it rescheduled the trip for the last week of that month, at $150 a place.[39][40]
Reception on Overgrow
Buyers on Overgrow reported orders arriving from Kenya in three to six weeks, undamaged and discreetly packed.[41][42] Upstate wrote in May 2024 that most packages had taken three or four weeks and that every order had "arrived in good shape".[43]
In February 2025 donors to the Goma trip were still waiting for their seed four and a half months after the trip ended.[44][45] In June 2025 one donor wrote of waiting five months.[46] Members reported a parcel lost in the post, for which the seller offered a replacement;[47] two packs taken by customs and sent again;[48] and seeds crushed in the post, for which the seller promised another pack.[49][50]
In June 2025 some donors to the Uganda trip objected that they had paid for seed the seller collected, not for seed reproduced in the United States.[51][52] Another replied that "The group collectively decided it was acceptable for Upstate to repro."[53]
District_Flora, who grew the Shashamane line in 2022 as a preservation run for the Freakers Ball Seed Collective, said the seed had come from "the breeders blog".[54] Later that month District_Flora recalled being told by the seller that "some of these seeds he collected were bag seed", that is, seed found in cannabis bought for smoking.[55]
Grow reports and reproductions
Overgrow members have posted grow reports of the Masisi,[56][57] Shashamane,[13][54] Kilimanjaro[58][59] and Angola lines.[60][61] Most of the Masisi plants members grew came from Upstate's reproduction. One member made a further increase from it.[62] InTheWoods crossed the Kilimanjaro with a line called Dream Drifter.[63] A list of a new release by Colorado Sativas, posted on the forum in January 2026, included North Angola Sativa and Kilimanjaro Sativa under East Africa Genes' name.[64]
