Anon. s.n., Guémar is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa dated 17 April 1858, whose locality reads Cultivé dans l'oasis de Guémar (Souf). The wording places the plant under cultivation in the oasis of Guémar, in the Souf of south-eastern Algeria. No collector is named on the label, and the catalogue carries the abbreviation s.c., for sine collectore. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sheet as catalogue P06886058.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 731738679.[2]
Collection and locality
The label, a slip pinned beneath the roots, reads Cannabis sativa L., cultivé dans l'oasis de Guémar (Souf) and 17 avril 1858., in one hand and unsigned.[3] The catalogue transcribes the same locality and day.[1][2] No habitat, altitude, collection number or collector is given.
The sheet carries the printed label HERB. E. COSSON., the herbarium of Ernest Cosson.[3] Cosson's herbarium was offered to the Muséum by his grandson at the end of 1903.[4]
Guémar is a town of the Souf, the belt of oasis settlements around El Oued in the north-eastern Algerian Sahara. It lies in El Oued Province.[5]
Cultivation stated on a label carries further than a bare occurrence, because it places the plant in a grower's hands and not merely in a landscape. Specimen and identification
The sheet holds several small plants with their roots, flowering at the tips. The label names them Cannabis sativa L.[3] The catalogue records the preparation as a herbarium sheet and the name as Cannabis sativa L., with no determiner named.[1][2] One image of the sheet is published with the occurrence, under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.[2]
