Evidentiary scope
The catalogue gives the locality as Cultivé dans l'oasis de Guémar (Souf) (cultivated in the oasis of Guémar, in the Souf), and the unsigned field label carries the same words with the date 17 April 1858. The label names no grower, no use, no variety and no local name. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1858. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label and the catalogue. The sheet does not show who grew the plant, from what seed, what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.
The Souf is an oasis belt in the north-eastern Algerian Sahara, worked by hand-dug ghout plantations. Nothing in this sheet describes that system and the article does not claim it does.
Label reading
Read from the museum's scan at full resolution (3180 × 4881 pixels).
- Field label (manuscript, one hand, pinned beneath the roots): Cannabis sativa L. / cultivé dans l'oasis de / Guémar (Souf) / 17 avril 1858.
- Herbarium label (upper right): printed HERB. E. COSSON.; no manuscript.
- Barcode. Herbier Muséum Paris P06886058.
The label names no collector and is unsigned, so the catalogue's s.c. reflects the sheet and is not a gap in transcription. The printed Cosson label shows that the sheet came to the museum with Cosson's herbarium. It does not make Cosson the collector. He is not asserted as one.
Georeferencing
Guémar is a town of the Souf, in El Oued Province, north of El Oued itself. The locality names the oasis and not a plot. The point 33.49, 6.80 is the town of Guémar, OpenStreetMap node 1565786170. The town's neighbourhoods in OpenStreetMap reach 3.7 km from the point, with mapped gardens among and beside them, and 1 km is added for the rounding of the point; the commune (relation 5139191, about 1,261 km²) is far larger than the oasis and is not used. Neighbouring Taghzout, a separate town, is left outside. It places the gathering in the oasis, not at a plot within it. No altitude or habitat is carried, so no elevation is asserted. An earlier version of this note gave no point because the locality names the oasis and not a plot. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
The title follows the form used for Anon. s.n., Samulcottah (1822), the other accession in the corpus whose sheet names no collector: Anon. stands in the collector position and the locality and year complete the title. The collector and collector-number fields are left empty and not filled with Anon., so that queries on collector return nothing and not a placeholder.
The date is a full day and is stored as such. It is not the publisher's year-only encoding, which appears as a 1 January to 31 December span on Steinheil s.n., Bône (1834) and Barat s.n., Sig (1850).
