Property:Has classification
More actions
This property records the kind of cannabis population an accession's material was taken from. It is set by the classification field of the accession infobox.
This is a property of type Text.
The allowed values for this property are:
- Landrace
- Feral
- Landrace IBL
- Hybrid
- Other
The values
| Value | The material was taken from |
|---|---|
| Landrace | a crop grown and kept by local people at the place the accession names (see Landrace Cannabis) |
| Feral | plants growing outside cultivation: escaped, weedy, ruderal or wild-growing. Wild populations take this value; there is no separate one for them (see Feral and ruderal Cannabis) |
| Landrace IBL | an inbred line stabilised from a landrace |
| Hybrid | a documented cross between populations of different origin, or a line descended from one |
| Other | a population whose class the sources cannot establish |
The class says where the material came from. It does not say that the population survives, that seed exists or that anything is conserved, and it sets no conservation priority.
Herbarium specimens
A herbarium sheet is classed by the population its plant was taken from, as far as the label or the holder's catalogue shows it.
- Feral where the label or catalogue places the plant outside cultivation: a weedy place, waste ground, a roadside, a fallow or abandoned field, a field margin, an escape, or a plant described as wild, spontaneous or not cultivated.
- Landrace where the label places the plant in a crop at the named place: cultivated by local people, in village fields or on terraces, a hemp patch, a field crop.
- Other where the plant grew in a botanic garden, an experimental or research station, an institute, a nursery or a medicinal-plant garden, was raised from seed sent from elsewhere, or belongs to a named variety. These plants were cultivated, but not as a crop of the place on the label.
- Other where the label gives no habitat or cultivation statement, or records cultivated and spontaneous plants without saying which this one was.
Only the label's own habitat line, or the catalogue's, counts. A determination name such as Cannabis ruderalis or C. sativa var. spontanea is not a habitat, and neither is a herbarium's own name printed on its label.
Collection date and hybrids
Western breeders began crossing Central Asian with South Asian drug-type landraces in the early 1970s. Seed from other regions reached old growing areas from about 1972: Afghanistan, then Nepal, Jamaica and Thailand in the 1970s, Kashmir by 1980, and South Africa and Morocco in the 1980s.[1]: 84–85 Until the 1970s the Central Asian drug-type crop was confined to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkestan.[1]: 104
A cultivated sheet gathered before 1966 is therefore not treated as a possible hybrid. For a sheet gathered in 1966 or later the date excludes nothing, and a cultivated sheet is classed Landrace only where its label ties it to local cultivation: the people who grew it, a village field or terrace, a local name. An undated sheet gets no inference from its date. A feral plant is classed by its habitat, whatever its date.
Each sheet's Talk page gives the evidence for its class.
Seed lines
A living seed line is classed by its documented history. Its collection date is not used.
