Yu 7817 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at the side of a field on the bank of the Mekong at Chiapieh, in Yunnan, China, at 2,000 m on 30 October 1937 by T. T. Yu. The Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing holds two sheets, PE 00578084[1] and PE 00578085[2], and the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences a third as KUN 0169109.[3]
Collection and locality
Each sheet carries a Flora of Yunnan form of the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology, filled in by hand: the number 7817, the date Oct. 30. 1937, the locality Bank of Mekong River Chiapieh, the altitude 2000M, the habitat Side of field, a herb 3 feet high with leaves dark green above and whitish beneath and green flowers, the note Common and the collector T. T. Yü. A glassine packet is marked T.T.Yu 7817, and a round printed tag reads F. I. B. Yunnan Exp. with the collector and number.[4][5] The catalogue gives the collector as 俞德俊, the number, the year and Yunnan.[1] The Kunming sheet carries the same round tag and a later form of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Kunming Work Station (中國科學院植物分類研究所昆明工作站), filled in by hand with the same entries: the number, Oct. 30, 1937, Bank of mekong River chiapieh, 2000 m, side of field, a herb 3 ft high, the leaf note, green flowers with the female sign, common and T. T. Yu.[6]
Specimen and identification
Both sheets carry slender stems with a few narrow, serrate leaflets and small flower clusters. A later slip on each names the plant Cannabis sativa L., signed 關克儉 on 27 January 1956.[4][5] The Kunming sheet carries one tall leafy stem, branched above, with small clusters of female flowers in the leaf axils, and a slip of 1959 naming the plant Cannabis sativa L.[6] Yü gathered cannabis near Atuntze, in the same district, two months earlier: Yu 10078 (1937).
