Wallich 4665B is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from Bareilly, in Uttar Pradesh, India, held in William Roxburgh's herbarium. It is lot B of entry 4665 in Nathaniel Wallich's numbered list of the East India Company's herbarium, which reads Hb. Roxb. e Bareilly, from Roxburgh's herbarium, from Bareilly.[1] The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds the lot on one sheet, under the barcodes K001039633 and K001039634.[2][3]
The Wallich lot
Entry 4665 of the list, Cannabis sativa, is printed on page 166 and divides into lots lettered A to F, most of them identified by the herbarium or garden that supplied the material; lots G and H were added on page 215.[1] The Wallich Catalogue Online gives lot B's place as Bareilly, India, and its source as Roxburgh's herbarium; it names no collector.[1]
Collection and locality
Each stem has its own small slip. The left one reads ♀ Cannabis sativa or Bang. from Barielly, the right one ♂ Cannabis sativa Bang. from Barielly.[4] Neither slip gives a date or a collector. The catalogue gives the locality as Bareilly and the country as India.[5]
McPartland and Small list the sheet as gathered by Roxburgh at Bareilly in 1796, in their list of var. himalayensis, without saying where the year comes from.[6]
Specimen and identification
A female flowering top is mounted on the left and a slender, branched male stem on the right, with the sex marked in pencil under each.[4] The slips name the plant Cannabis sativa and give it the name Bang.; the catalogue names it Cannabis sativa L.[5]
