Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The two slips give a place, the sex of each stem and a name, Bang. They give no date, no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from Kew's image of the sheet (7142 × 10248 pixels; the images Kew publishes for the two barcodes are the same file).
- Slip, top left: ♀ Cannabis / sativa / or Bang. from / Barielly; pencil 4665 sideways.
- Slip, top right: ♂ Cannabis / sativa / Bang. from / Barielly; pencil 4665. sideways.
- Sheet: a printed box 4665.B; pencil 4665. Hb. Roxb.; ♀ and ♂ in pencil under the stems.
Both readings take the place as Barielly with medium confidence on the fourth and fifth letters; the page gives the catalogue's spelling, Bareilly.
Georeferencing
The point 28.36, 79.42 is the city of Bareilly, OpenStreetMap node 245765070, the place the slips and the Wallich Catalogue Online name. Nothing on the sheet says where in or around the city the plants grew. OpenStreetMap draws no boundary for the city itself; the point stands at least 7.5 km from every edge of Bareilly Tehsil (relation 10011679, about 728 km²), the unit that contains the city, and the uncertainty allows for the city's extent. The point places the gathering at the city, not at a spot within it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km.
Editorial treatment
Title. The title follows the live Wallich lots, Wallich 4665E (by 1832) and Wallich 4665F (by 1832): Wallich's name, the entry number and the lot letter. No date is written on the sheet; the year is the end of the list's main distribution, in the summer of 1832, which included page 166.
Collector. Left empty. The list names Roxburgh's herbarium as the lot's source, not a collector, and the slips name nobody. McPartland and Small's Roxburgh, 1796 is reported in the article as theirs.
Local name. The local name field takes the slips' Bang. The slips do not say in which language.
Source discrepancies
- McPartland and Small (2020, supplementary list) date the sheet 1796. The sheet and the Wallich list give no date, and the year is not stored.
