Wallich 4665A is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered at Sadullahpur on 5 January 1809. It is lot A of entry 4665 in Nathaniel Wallich's numbered list of the East India Company's herbarium, the lot the list attributes to Hamilton.[1] The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds the lot on one sheet, under the barcodes K001039631 and K001039632.[2]
The Wallich lot
Entry 4665 of the list, Cannabis sativa, is printed on page 166 and divides into lots lettered A to F, most of them identified by the herbarium or garden that supplied the material; lots G and H were added on page 215.[1] Lot A reads H Ham.- Sudallapur & HBC: Hamilton's herbarium, from Sudallapur and from HBC, the Company's botanic garden at Calcutta.[1] The two letters stand for two gatherings, and the sheet carries one stem of each.
Collection and locality
A slip at the lower right, under the barcode K001039632, reads Cannabis sativa spontanea and Sadullahpur 5 Jany 1809; a slip at the top right reads Cannabis sativa ♂ and Botanical garden 21 Jany 1815. Each is pencilled 4665 with a letter, and the same letters stand beside the two stems.[3]
The Wallich Catalogue Online records Hamilton's Sadullapur, with the spellings Sadullapore and Sudallapur, as the present Sadullahpur in Bangladesh.[4]
Specimen and identification
Two leafy, flowering stems are mounted, each marked in pencil with the letter of its slip.[3] The catalogue names the plant Cannabis sativa L.[5] The master slip at the top left gives the whole of entry 4665 in one hand, lots A to F, with lots G and H pasted beside it.[3]
John McPartland and Ernest Small list the Sadullahpur stem, with the date 5 January 1809, among the sheets whose fruits are intermediate between their domesticated var. indica and their wild-type var. himalayensis, and the garden stem, dated 21 January 1815, beside it.[6] Their list of var. indica names the same lot again, without a date.[7]
