1970 UMS Turkey MS-SPP Reproduction is a reproduction accession of Cannabis sativa grown from seed recorded as coming from Turkey. It is known from six herbarium sheets that M. W. Quimby gathered in 1970 and 1971 at the University of Mississippi, whose labels carry the code MS-SPP and call the seed Turkish. The sheets are held in the Economic Botany Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Seed lot
Every label calls the seed Turkish, carries the year 1967, and says that a small sample was supplied by Dr. Stig Agurel (so spelled).[1][2][3][4][5][6] Four labels date the supply to the autumn of 1969 (fall of 1969, or fall, 1969 on sheet 01005297); the label of sheet 01005307, gathered on the same day as 01005297, reads fall of 1968; and the label of sheet 01005304 gives no date. The lot was grown in 1970 and again in 1971. Quimby also grew Turkish seed under other codes, in 1970 under MS-SDD (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019700001), MS-SEE (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019700002) and MS-SY (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019700004) and in 1971 under MS-SFF (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019710001), MS-SGG (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019710002) and MS-SHHH (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019710003). In 1972 the university's garden grew the Turkish original sample T A (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019720001), lots coded T A1, T A2 and T A3, which the labels call its generations, and a third seed lot, T C (UMS-TUR-UNK-0019720002).
Grow-out
The plants grew on university land at University, in Lafayette County, Mississippi, under cultivation in silt-like soil (loess).[1] In 1968 the National Institute of Mental Health offered a contract for the supply of standardised marijuana to researchers, and Norman Doorenbos, who chaired the university's Department of Pharmacognosy, won it. The university's own account of the programme says that the first experimental plot, grown that year, was sown with seed from Mexico, Panama, Southeast Asia, Korea, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Lebanon, and that a secured garden was built in 1969 for the first substantial crop.[7]
Specimens and identification
All six sheets came to Harvard from the herbarium of the Department of Pharmacognosy of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. The label name is Cannabis sativa Linnaeus. On 16 February 1976 Ernest Small determined them as Cannabis sativa Linnaeus, the name under which Harvard files them.[1]
