1969 UMS Thailand MS-SL Reproduction is a reproduction accession of Cannabis sativa grown from seed recorded as coming from Thailand. It is known from one herbarium sheet that M. W. Quimby gathered on 11 October 1969 at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Mississippi, whose label reads Code MS-SL and Source: Thailand Marihuana Seed, Nov. 1969. The sheet is held in the Economic Botany Herbarium of the Harvard University Herbaria.[1]
Seed lot
The label reads Code MS-SL; Source: Thailand Marihuana Seed, Nov. 1969.[1] In 1970 Quimby grew Thai seed whose labels are dated 17 January 1970, under the codes MS-SM and MS-SO (UMS-THA-UNK-0019700001), and in 1971 a Thai lot coded Ti D1 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019710001). In 1972 the university's garden grew three Thai seed lots, Ti B1 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019720001), Ti C1 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019720002) and Ti D1 (UMS-THA-UNK-0019720003).
Grow-out
The plants grew on university land at University, in Lafayette County, Mississippi, under cultivation in silt-like soil (loess).[1] In 1968 the National Institute of Mental Health offered a contract for the supply of standardised marijuana to researchers, and Norman Doorenbos, who chaired the university's Department of Pharmacognosy, won it. The university's own account of the programme says that the first experimental plot, grown that year, was sown with seed from Mexico, Panama, Southeast Asia, Korea, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Lebanon, and that a secured garden was built in 1969 for the first substantial crop.[2]
Specimens and identification
The sheet came to Harvard from the herbarium of the Department of Pharmacognosy of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. The original label name is Cannabis sativa Linnaeus. On 16 February 1976 Ernest Small determined it as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica, the name under which Harvard files it.[1]
