Thomson s.n., north-west Himalaya is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from the north-west Himalaya, gathered by Thomas Thomson and distributed by Joseph Dalton Hooker and Thomson. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds two sheets with the same slip, P06884266, received in 1859, and P06884265.[1][2]
Collection and locality
Both sheets carry a handwritten slip headed Herb. Ind. Or. Hook. fil. & Thomson, with the same words in the same hand: Cannabis sativa var. indica, Hab. Himal. Bor. Occ. (north-west Himalaya), Regio temp. (temperate zone), alt. 1-7000 ped. (altitude 1–7000 feet) and Coll. T.T.[3][4] The slip gives no date and no number. P06884266 also carries a printed label, Indes orientales and Donné par MM. J-D. Hooker et Thomson. 1859. (given by Messrs J. D. Hooker and Thomson, 1859), with a later determination, Cannabis sativa L. var. indica.[3] P06884265 carries the printed label Herbier E. Drake and came to the museum with that herbarium.[4]
McPartland and Small list a sheet of the same distribution at the Komarov Botanical Institute in St Petersburg, with the altitude 1-7000 ft, among the sheets whose fruits are intermediate between their var. indica and var. himalayensis.[5]
Specimen and identification
P06884266 holds a slender male flowering stem, a leafy female stem and a loose leaf; P06884265 holds one long, arching leafy stem.[3][4] The slips name the plant Cannabis sativa var. indica; the catalogue names it Cannabis sativa L.[1]
The neotype of Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. himalayensis, Thomson s.n. (1847), is a different sheet of Thomson's, at Harvard.
