Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The slip names a region, a climatic zone and an altitude band. It gives no date, no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Each sheet was read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copies of the museum's images (P06884266, 1600 × 2465 pixels; P06884265, 1600 × 2440 pixels); the museum's own image server refused the connection. The two slips agree word for word and line for line, and appear to be in one hand:

  • Herb. Ind. Or. Hook. fil. & Thomson. / Cannabis sativa var. indica / Hab. Himal. Bor. Occ. / Regio temp. / alt. 1-7000 ped. / Coll. T.T.
  • P06884266 also: printed HERB. MUS. PARIS., by hand Cannabis sativa L. var. indica, printed INDES ORIENTALES. / Donné par MM. J-D. Hooker et Thomson. 1859.
  • P06884265 also: printed HERBIER E. DRAKE.

Both readings take the first figure of the altitude as 1; McPartland and Small give the same band, 1-7000 ft, for the St Petersburg sheet.

Georeferencing

No point is given. Himal. Bor. Occ. (north-west Himalaya) names a region that runs across several of today's Indian states and beyond, and the altitude band of 1 to 7,000 feet covers most of it. The slip names no place within it.

Editorial treatment

Two sheets, one accession. The two sheets carry the same slip, which names a region and an altitude band, not a place and a day. The slips were written for the distribution of the herbarium of Hooker and Thomson, and a slip of this kind may cover more than one gathering of the same plant in the same region; the page does not claim that the two sheets come from one plant or one day. They are paged together because nothing on either separates them. The infobox takes P06884266's values and gives both catalogue numbers.

Title and date. No number or date is written, so the title takes s.n., the region and by 1859, the year of the donation printed on P06884266's label.

Collector. The slip's Coll. T.T. and the distribution's name give Thomas Thomson (1817–1878), Hooker's partner in it; the collector field takes T. Thomson.

Other Thomson sheets. Thomson s.n. (1847), the neotype of var. himalayensis at Harvard, carries a place quoted as Himalaya Boreal. Occident., Regio Temp. and a year; the Paris slips carry an altitude band and no year, so the sheets are not treated as duplicates of it. Edinburgh's Thomson s.n. (by 1878) is also a separate accession. The museum catalogues a third Thomson sheet with the same place words, P02443057, whose image could not be retrieved; it is not paged here.

  • The image of P02443057, which the catalogue gives as Hab. Himal. Bor. Oce. Regio. temp., could not be retrieved. It may carry the same slip.
