Thomson 229 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa labelled Mountains of Northern India and numbered 229 by Thomas Thomson (1817 to 1878).[1] The label gives no date, so the title carries the collector's death year as its limit. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248607.[2] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 574947356.[3]
Collection and locality
The label is written in ink at the foot of the sheet: Cannabis sativa., then Mountains of Northern India, then Dr T. Thomson, No 229.[4] There is no date, no altitude and no habitat. The locality names a mountain belt and not a place.[4] The catalogue gives the collector as Thomson, Thomas and the number as 229, with no date and no locality.[2][3]
Thomson's other Edinburgh sheet of Cannabis is Thomson s.n. (by 1878), whose label names the north-west Himalaya.
Specimen and identification
One long leafy stem is mounted on blue paper, with flowering shoots along its upper half.[4] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa and the catalogue records it as Cannabis sativa L.[4][2]
The sheet is marked GL in purple at the top right and carries a blind embossed University of Glasgow stamp below it.[4]
