Targuist is a landrace cannabis growing area in the central Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, round the town of Targuist in Al Hoceima Province. It lies east and south-east of the Ketama growing area.
Geography
In 1975 Ketama was administered by a government-appointed caid based at Targuist, under the governor of the province, then called Alhucemas.[1]: 186 The road from Issaguen to the city of Al Hoceima runs through Targuist. Along it in 2015 a reporter for Finances News Hebdo saw the cedar-covered mountains give way to red earth and bare slopes, with ploughed fields in the valley below that would turn dark green within a few months.[2]
History
Between 1872 and 1893 Abderahmane Ben Tayeb, a scholar from Bejaia who was the informant of the French writer Auguste Mouliéras, travelled the Rif and the Jebala country several times.[3]: 126 He saw fields of kif and tobacco among the Senhaja Gheddou, the Beni Mezguilda, the Beni Bounsar, the Beni Khennous and the Beni Amret.[3]: 127
Growing since 2000
In 2004 the national cannabis survey of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the development agency for the northern provinces measured yields in Al Hoceima Province on plots at Issaguen, Targuist, Bni Boufrah and Bni Gmil.[4]: 56
