Discussion
Identifier
The accession identifier is RSC-PAK-KHY-0120240001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Province segment
KHYis for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as on RSC-PAK-KHY-0120190001. - Year 2024 is the harvest in the sourcing line. The month digits are
01because no month is given. - Sequence 0001. It is the only RSC accession for this province segment and year.
Sourcing
The RSC listing for Tirah as it stood on 27 October 2026 and its 22 versions in the Wayback Machine from September 2019 to July 2026, one of which (October 2024) holds only a holding page; the Kwik Seeds listing as it stood on 26 October 2026; and the GRIN-Global entries for G 33766 and G 33891 to G 33897. Kwik Seeds is the shop RSC calls its other site (RSC, Hemp & Multipurpose).
Lots at this listing
The listing's address has carried four lots under the title Tirah:
- "The Real Seed Company, collected in Tirah Valley, Hindu Kush, 2018 harvest", September and November 2019 (two versions), sold at half price because its viability had tested at about 60 per cent;
- "Landrace Genetics, Tirah Valley, Hindu Kush, 2019 Harvest", September 2020 to July 2022 (six);
- "Landrace Genetics, Tirah Valley, Hindu Kush, 2022 Harvest", December 2022 to January 2025 (seven readable versions);
- "Landrace Genetics, Tirah Valley, Hindu Kush, 2024 Harvest", from May 2025 (six).
This page is the 2024 lot. The three earlier lots are RSC-PAK-KHY-0120180002, RSC-PAK-KHY-0120190003 and RSC-PAK-KHY-0120220001, linked as related. RSC's post of 17 February 2025 named Tirah among the accessions with excellent resistance to powdery mildew in its trials; the lot then on sale was the 2022 harvest, so the article does not report it here.
Typing
- Classification: Landrace, sourcing type
Point of Origin, autochtonousYes: the listing describes an authentic landrace from the Tirah Valley, of the 2024 harvest. - Collector.
Angus, as on the other accessions whose sourcing line reads "Landrace Genetics". - Hierarchy. Growing area
Tirah, the wiki's page for the valley's growing area. No growing region is entered: "Hindu Kush" in the listing is the seller's name for the mountains and stays in the sourcing quoted above, while the wiki's Hindu Kush growing region takes in only Upper and Lower Chitral on the Pakistani side, and no source places Tirah in a growing region. No district is entered: the wiki's Tirah page spans Khyber and Orakzai districts, and the listing names neither. - Leaf shape.
Broad, from "mostly broad-leafleted". - Height is left empty: RSC gives about 2 metres and Kwik Seeds 1 to 4 metres.
- Processing. "Charas (sieved resin)" is entered as
Dry-sift; the notes keep the listing's "garda". - Related accessions. The three earlier lots of this listing, and KHA-PAK-KHY-0120250001, Khalifa Genetics' Tirah Maidan Hash Plant of 2025, from the same growing area. The sources do not say whether the two share a source.
- Conventions. Photoperiod
Short-dayand introgressionMinimalfollow the other RSC accessions; the listing states neither.
Georeferencing
The listing names the Tirah Valley and no village. The point 33.72, 70.95 is the point of the wiki's Tirah page, which describes a growing area of about 1,700 km² in Khyber and Orakzai districts. OpenStreetMap places it in Lower Orakzai Tehsil, Orakzai District (relation 16502874), 3.2 km from the village of Kalaya (node 11267308751), and SRTM gives 2,023 m there. It is an area point for the valley, not the place the seed was gathered, and the uncertainty is the radius of a circle of the growing area's size. The donor's point on the USDA entry G 33897, Tirah (T.V.), 33.7340, 71.0140, lies 6.1 km to the east in the same tehsil; that seed is not this lot (below). Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 24 km.
Source discrepancies
- Harvest year. RSC: "2024 Harvest" and "This accession is from the 2024 harvest". Kwik Seeds: "(2024 Harvest)" in its sourcing line, but "This accession is from the 2019 harvest" in its description.
- Harvest. RSC: "late-September to early November". Kwik Seeds: "late-September through October".
- Height. RSC: "Approx. 2 meters". Kwik Seeds: "1 – 4 meters".
- Leaflets. RSC: "mostly broad-leafleted". Kwik Seeds: "broad- to narrow-leafleted", with the classification "C. sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica x C. sativa subsp. indica var. indica".
Photographs
None. The listing's photographs first appear in September 2020, January 2022 and September 2024, all before the 2024 lot went on sale in May 2025, so none is taken to show this lot.
USDA genebank accessions
Two sets of entries in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System concern RSC's Tirah line. Neither is listed in the infobox, because neither is seed of the 2024 harvest:
- G 33766, Tirah (GRIN-Global entry), received on 22 August 2023 in a donation of one packet from Angus, which the donor describes as a charas landrace. The listing then sold the 2022 lot, and the entry is listed on RSC-PAK-KHY-0120220001 as the same lot.
- G 33891 to G 33897, Tirah (6F), (7A), (7E), (7F), (7H), (N) and (T.V.) (GRIN-Global entry for G 33897), received on 25 July 2024. The donor's note on each says that there is some question whether they came from Tirah or from somewhere else in Pakistan, and that they are seeds selected from outstanding individual plants. Each is its own accession, from NPG-PAK-UNK-0020240002 to NPG-PAK-UNK-0020240007 and NPG-PAK-KHY-0020240001.
