Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label records hemp seed attributed to the Meo of Van Bu and given by Henri d'Orléans. It does not say who gathered the seed, when, or from which planting, and gives no use. The seeds are a museum sample; nothing is known of their viability. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Context. Henri d'Orléans' account of his 1891–1892 journey, Autour du Tonkin (Paris, 1894), describes a visit to a Meo village behind Van-Bou and notes that the Meo wove the hemp they grew on a simple loom (p. 231). His diary dates the stage from Van-Yen to Van-Bou to 11 February 1892, and the visit to the Meo fell between about 12 and 17 February 1892. The label does not connect the seeds to that visit, so the infobox carries no date and the article does not make the connection. The book was read in its Gallica copy (bpt6k6115112t).
Label reading
Read from the museum's photograph at full resolution (3728 × 3594 pixels; photograph J. Morel, 2021).
- Collection label (printed slip held between two metal clips, filled in by hand): Rue de Savoie, 5 │ 5, Rue de Savoie / COLLECTIONS / DE LA / SOCIÉTÉ DE GÉOGRAPHIE COMMERCIALE DE PARIS / No 3186 (a flourish or letter after the number, not read) Graines de chanvre / Meos de Van Bu (Rivière Noire) / DON de Mr le Pce H. d'Orléans.
- Museum label. HERBARIUM MUSEI PARISIENSIS, barcode P02443048.
The catalogue's Meos (?) reads plainly Meos on the label.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted. The label names the Meo of Van Bu, a people of a place, not a point where the seed was gathered. The museum's own georeference for d'Orléans' Van-Bu sits at Tạ Bú in Mường La (21.489, 104.0261; since 16 June 2025 the commune of Mường Bú); the Meo village he visited lay behind it, at a distance his account does not give. The province field takes Sơn La Province, in which Tạ Bú lies.
Editorial treatment
Accession type. The sample is entered as an accession with collection method Seeds and sourcing type Historical: it is labelled seed of a named people and place, held in a public collection.
Title. The number 3186 is the Société de Géographie Commerciale's collection number, not a collector's, so the title takes the s.n. form; the label gives no date, hence (s.d.). MediaWiki capitalises a title's first letter, so the particle is dropped there and kept in the prose.
Collector. The label names d'Orléans as donor; whether he gathered the seed himself is not stated. The collector field takes H. d'Orléans, the person the label credits. The Harvard botanist index gives him as Henri Philippe Marie, prince d'Orléans (1867–1901), and the prose links that form.
Image. The photograph is published under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 and is uploaded unaltered.
Meo. The label's Meos is quoted as written; the sentence on the name Hmong is Filbeck's and attributed to him, as on Garrett 851 (1933).
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue reads Meos (?); the label reads Meos.
- The catalogue's field number 3186 is the Société's collection number.
