Orléans s.n., Van Bu is an accession of Cannabis seed labelled as coming from the Meo of Van Bu on the Black River, in northern Vietnam, and given by Henri d'Orléans to the Société de Géographie Commerciale de Paris. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle holds the sample as P02443048.[1] The label is undated.
Collection and locality
The sample is a small lot of loose seeds kept with a printed label of the Collections de la Société de Géographie Commerciale de Paris, Rue de Savoie. Filled in by hand, it reads No 3186, Graines de chanvre (hemp seeds), Meos de Van Bu (Rivière Noire) (Meo of Van Bu, Black River) and Don de Mr le Pce H. d'Orléans (gift of Prince H. d'Orléans).[2] The catalogue gives the locality as Meos (?) de Van Bu (Rivière Noire), the number 3186 and the donor as Orléans, H. d', with no date.[1] Writing in 1987, David Filbeck noted that the people called Meo had come to be called Hmong, the name they use for themselves.[3]
Specimen and identification
The museum's photograph shows about seventeen seeds beside a colour chart and a scale bar.[2] The catalogue records the sample as Cannabis L., determined by Morel, and files it with the museum's seed and fruit collection.[1]
