Garrett 851 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on Doi Langka in northern Thailand on 2 December 1933 by H. B. G. Garrett. The Forest Herbarium (BKF) in Bangkok holds the sheet as accession BKF 4602, barcode SN 009247.[1] A duplicate of the gathering, received from the Kew herbarium, is held by the Naturalis Biodiversity Center as catalogue L.1592634[2] and published by GBIF as preserved specimen occurrence 2513888669.[3]
Collection and locality
The printed label of the Siam Forest Service gives the locality as Doi Langkā and Mê Soi (in Thai, ดอยลังกา and แม่สอย). It gives the altitude as Aneroid c 1100 metres.[4] It carries Garrett's number 851 and the date 2 Dec 1933. A string tag on the stem repeats 851 2/12 1933.[4] The Forest Herbarium's catalogue gives the major area as Chiang Rai.[1]
Recorded local name and use
The label gives the local name as Pān, with the Thai ป่าน. It describes the plants as Shrubs about 10 ft and records them as Cultivated by Mêo people for weaving.[4] Writing in 1987, David Filbeck noted that the people called Meo had come to be called Hmong, the name they use for themselves.[5]
Specimen and identification
The label names the plant Cannabis sativa, Linn.[4] The catalogue records it as Cannabis sativa L.[1] The sheet carries a leafy branch with a dense cluster of fruits and is marked with the female sign. Its colour entry reads Green.[4] Garrett 852, collected at the same place on the same day, is marked with the male sign.
The Leiden duplicate carries the label Ex Herb. Hort. Bot. Reg. Kew. and the entry Siam 851, Cannabis sativa L., 2.12.33, H.B. Garrett.[6]
The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds a third sheet of the gathering as P06884295.[7] It carries the same Kew label: Ex Herb. Hort. Bot. Reg. Kew., Siam, 851, Cannabis sativa Linn., 2.12.33 and H. B. Garrett. The museum's slip dates its receipt to 1-3-1939.[8]
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds a fourth sheet of the gathering as E01459334.[9] It carries the same Kew label, with Siam, 851, Cannabis sativa Linn., 2.12.33 and H. B. Garrett.[10] The garden's catalogue files it under the herbarium region Indo-China and records no collector, date or country.[9]

Sequenced duplicate
The Leiden duplicate, L.1592634, was sampled for DNA. Wageningen University submitted the sample to the European Nucleotide Archive; it is BioSample SAMEA115332540, public since 20 February 2026. Its voucher is L.1592634, its collector Garrett, HBG, its date 2 December 1933 and its tissue Leaf.[11] The sample is the Leiden sheet's, not the Forest Herbarium's.
