Anon. s.n., Samulcottah is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa labelled Samulcottah and dated October 1822. No collector is named, on the sheet or in the catalogue. Samulcottah is Samalkot, the East India Company station in the Northern Circars whose port was Kakinada; it is now in Kakinada District, Andhra Pradesh, India.[1] The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248825.[2] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 574753869.[3]
Collection and locality
One narrow label is mounted at the foot of the sheet, written in a single hand in ink. A brace joins its two columns, so that Samulcottah and October 1822 on the left stand against Cannabis sativa on the right.[4] The label carries no collector, no number, no altitude and no habitat. There is no second slip.[4]
The catalogue carries neither the date nor the locality. It names no collector.[2][3] Edinburgh holds two other Indian sheets of Cannabis from the same decades, Buchanan-Hamilton 2182 (1815) and Wight s.n. (1821), the second of them dated October 1821.
Specimen and identification
Two leafy branches are mounted, the upper one bearing a long flowering spike and the lower one broad palmate leaves.[4] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa. The catalogue records it as Cannabis sativa L.[4][2] An oval stamp of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh sits on the mount between the two branches.[4]
