Smirnov 137 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered on a one-year fallow, on ground where millet had been sown, on the second terrace of the lower Karatal in today's Jetisu Region, Kazakhstan, on 21 June 1928 by V. I. Smirnov of the Dzhetysu botanical expedition. The Moscow University Herbarium holds the sheet as MW0818736.[1]
Collection and locality
The printed label reads Центральное Управление Землеустройства Казакстана. Джетысуйская ботаническая экспедиция 1928 года под руководством Н. В. Павлова. В. И. Смирнов. Растения Семиречья, Талды-Курганского уезда. (Central Land Management Administration of Kazakhstan. Dzhetysu botanical expedition of 1928 under the direction of N. V. Pavlov. V. I. Smirnov, Plants of Semirechye, Taldy-Kurgan uezd), with Собр. В. И. Смирнов (collected by V. I. Smirnov), a blank line for the determiner, and in Latin V. SMIRNOV. Plantae Kasakstanicae, gub. Dschetysu distr. Taldy-Kurgan. 1928. It is completed in blue ink Cannabis sativa L., Низовья р. Каратала, годичная залежь (на месте пос. проса) на 2й террасе между мог. Бакай и Бай-Гунды. (lower reaches of the river Karatal, a one-year fallow, on the site of a millet sowing, on the second terrace between the tombs Bakai and Bai-Gundy), 21/VI 28 and № 137. A separate printed map slip of the lower Karatal, Balkhash and Kopal area, at a scale of 60 versts to the inch (Масштаб 60 в. в дюйме), carries a red ink mark at the western edge of the map, on the Karatal, downstream of the place marked on Smirnov's sheets of 9 August.[2] The catalogue gives the collector, the number, the date and the place.[1] Those later sheets are Smirnov 919 (1928), Smirnov 921 (1928) and Smirnov 922 (1928).
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries two long, slender stems with palmate leaves, and a small transparent packet holding a few dark fragments.[2] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L. and leaves the determiner blank. A typed slip gives the redetermination of the sheet by E. Small of Canada Agriculture in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav.; the catalogue files it as Cannabis sativa L.[2][1]
