Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant on a one-year fallow on the lower Karatal, on ground where millet had been sown, in June 1928. It gives no use. The accession is classified Feral because the label places the plant on fallow ground, land that had been under crops; the label does not say whether hemp had been grown there, and a single gathering does not establish a feral population. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3504 × 4912 pixels).

  • Printed label. В. И. Смирнов. / Опр. (blank) / V. SMIRNOV. Plantae Kasakstanicae, gub. Dschetysu distr. Taldy-Kurgan. 1928.
  • By hand (blue). Cannabis sativa L. / Низовья р. Каратала, + годичная залежь (на месте пос. проса) на 2й / террасе между мог. Бакай и Бай-Гунды. / 21/VI 28 / № 137. пос. is read as посев (sowing), мог. as могила (tomb).
  • Map slip. A red ink mark at the map's western edge on the Karatal, south of Уроч. Кангай and just south of the printed 46° N parallel.
  • Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
  • A small transparent packet with a paper clip, right of the barcode, holds a few dark fragments that cannot be identified from the image.
  • The stamped number 230038 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

The point 46.044969, 77.205476 is the one the herbarium's database publishes for this sheet, with an uncertainty of 2.4 km. It lies 0.9 km from the Karatal (OpenStreetMap way 190752738) in Karatal District, Jetisu Region, on the river's lower course, and 17 km north, downstream, of the database's point for Smirnov's sheets of 9 August, as the label's map marks it downstream of theirs; SRTM gives 361 m. The tombs of Bakai and Bai-Gundy are not in OpenStreetMap under those spellings (Бакай, Bakai, Бай-Гунды, Байгунды, Baigundy), so the point cannot be checked against them, and the database does not say how it placed them. Basis: holder's georeference. Uncertainty: about 2.4 km.

Editorial treatment

Classification. The label's годичная залежь (на месте пос. проса) is a fallow in its first year, on ground that had carried millet. The plant grew on land that had been under crops, and the accession is classified Feral; the label does not say that hemp had been grown there.

Collector and place as for Smirnov 919 (1928).
