A Trafficker's Paradise: The "War On Drugs" and the New Cold War in Colombia
Contemporánea: Historia y problemas del siglo XX
A history of the marijuana boom on the Caribbean coast and of the "Two Peninsulas" campaign against it. The author traces marijuana growing on the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Guajira from crops near the United Fruit Company plantations in the south-eastern foothills, rarely exported, to the first export plantings, financed by United States and Colombian investors, worked by Andean migrants and moved by Guajira smugglers. She reports the creation of an improved strain, Colombian Golden or Santa Marta Gold. She dates the Colombian state's campaign, set up by decree 2144 of 1978, to 1 November 1978, and the decline of the trade to the mid-1980s.
