Tashkurgan General Population 2018 is a landrace cannabis accession of seed that a farmer gave to Lucas Strazzeri from his 2018 harvest near Tashkurgan, in Balkh Province, northern Afghanistan, on 20 November 2018.[1] The Real Seed Company (RSC) lists the line as Tashkurgan and now sells a reproduction of it, which is recorded at 2018 RSC Tashkurgan Reproduction.[2] The line is on sale at RSC and on its Kwik Seeds site (checked 27 October 2026).[2][3]

Geography

RSC describes Tashkurgan, also called Kholm, as an old centre of cannabis culture and a former Silk Road emporium north of the Hindu Kush, and gives a latitude of 36° N.[2] The collector's note gives an altitude of 400 metres and describes the crop as a planted field, with no modern hybrids in the area.[1]

History

RSC writes that the farmers of Tashkurgan are renowned for their skill in making charas, and that the farmer who gave the seed is regarded as a master of the art.[2] It writes that north Afghan hashish farmers historically left their crops to be harvested late, well into senescence, at the onset of winter in early December, as with the Mazar-i-Sharif strain, and that under the Taliban such farmers, and anyone who smokes cannabis, are under acute pressure.[2]

Collection Details

The listing gives the sourcing as "The Real Seed Company, Balkh Province, Northern Afghanistan, Winter 2018". Its earliest archived version, of August 2019, read "personally obtained at source in Balkh Province, northern Afghanistan, winter 2018" and showed photographs of the trip credited to Lucas Strazzeri.[4] RSC writes that the seed was sourced at some personal risk, with the help of Afghans whose local knowledge was crucial, and that the collector noted intense black currant and berry aromas in the live plants at the source, which carried over into the sieved resin.[2] In a post of December 2022 RSC described the accession as the one Strazzeri collected on a winter 2018 trip from Mazar-i-Sharif to old Silk Road towns such as Tashkurgan.[5]

The collector's note, filed with the USDA genebank, records that the seeds were given by a farmer from his 2018 harvest, so that the collector did not see the plants, and that a few seeds grown in the Alps the next season showed heavy branching, leaves turning from dark purple to blue as the temperature dropped, and some pink stigmas.[1] Angus gave two packets of Tashkurgan seed to the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System in August 2023, and it holds them as accession G 33764 at its Plant Genetic Resources Unit in Geneva, New York.[1][6]

Cultivation Details

RSC gives the purpose as charas (sieved resin) and the harvest as October to early December.[2]

Botanical Characteristics

RSC writes that under native conditions the leaflets of this landrace tend to the narrower end of the range, though broad leaflets are not unusual, and that in cultivated populations of the wider Hindu Kush leaflet widths range from broad to narrow. It expects CBD in most plants, sometimes in large amounts, and rarer cannabinoids such as THCV and CBDV in some.[2] It warns that the line may possibly be affected by modern genetics brought in from outside, such as a worked Dutch-American Afghan.[2]

The listing's photograph of 2019 shows a stand of the landrace in Balkh Province in 2018, underwatered and well into senescence.[4]
