Identifier

The accession identifier is RSC-AFG-BAL-0120220001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.

  • Province segment BAL is for Balkh Province, which the sourcing line names.
  • Year 2022 is the year in the sourcing line. The month digits are 01 because no month is given.
  • Sequence 0001. It is the only RSC accession for this province segment and year.

Sourcing

The RSC listing for Mazar-i-Sharif #2 as it stood on 27 October 2026 and its ten versions in the Wayback Machine from March 2023 to May 2026; the Kwik Seeds listing as it stood on 26 October 2026; RSC's posts of 13 February 2023, 14 February 2023 and 5 February 2025; and the GRIN-Global entry for G 33741. Kwik Seeds is the shop RSC calls its other site (RSC, Hemp & Multipurpose).

Lots at this listing

All ten archived versions are titled Mazar-i-Sharif #2 and give the same sourcing line, "Landrace Genetics, Balkh Province, Afghanistan (2022)", so one lot has been on sale and the page is not split. The Kwik Seeds address ends in -2; the address without the suffix redirects to it, and the Wayback Machine holds no capture of it. Mazar-i-Sharif #2 is a different lot from Mazar-i-Sharif, the reproduction of seed bought in Peshawar in 2007 (RSC-AFG-BAL-0520070001-R1).

Typing

  • Classification: Landrace, sourcing type Point of Origin, autochtonous Yes: the listing describes seed sourced from a farmer who grows the crop for hashish in Balkh Province.
  • Collector. Angus, as on the other accessions whose sourcing line reads "Landrace Genetics".
  • Growth pattern and leaf shape. "Semidwarf, bushy architecture" is entered as Bushy and "broad leaflets" as Broad.
  • Processing. "Charas (sieved resin)" is entered as Dry-sift.
  • Viability. Viable, from the germination test the listing reports for summer 2025.
  • Conventions. Photoperiod Short-day and introgression Minimal follow the other RSC accessions; the listing states neither.

Georeferencing

The point 36.7158, 67.1059 is the one the donor gave for this seed on the USDA genebank entry G 33741 in September 2026, used as published. It lies inside the city of Mazar-i-Sharif (OpenStreetMap relation 6572774, about 49 km²), 0.9 km from the city's centre point (node 2396275966), so it marks the city rather than a farm: the listing places the farmer in rural Balkh Province, outside the city. The uncertainty covers the city, whose boundary reaches 7.5 km from the point, and the countryside just beyond it. Basis: holder's georeference. Uncertainty: about 10 km.

Source discrepancies

  • What the landrace is. RSC, March 2023 to April 2024: "understood to be the very large landrace known to Afghan farmers by names such as 'Mazari', 'Balkhi', and 'Mazar-i-Sharif'"; RSC's post of 14 February 2023 calls the seed "a sample of the large landrace known to Afghan farmers as 'Mazari'". RSC from January 2025: a semidwarf type, while "Afghan cannabis farmers themselves refer to a different, larger landrace" by those names. Kwik Seeds: "This is the semidwarf Mazar-i-Sharif landrace."
  • Purpose. RSC: "Charas (sieved resin)"; Kwik Seeds and RSC until April 2025: "Charas (sieved resin), Bhang".
  • Harvest. RSC: "October"; Kwik Seeds and RSC until April 2024: "October to early December".
  • Genetics line. RSC: "North Afghan Cannabis Landrace – Mazar-i-Sharif"; Kwik Seeds and RSC in March 2023: "Mazar-i-Sharif Domesticate ("Landrace")".

Photographs

The infobox image is the listing's only photograph, uploaded under fair use at reduced resolution. The listing says "The photo shows this landrace outdoors at c. 40° N in mid-July", and RSC's post of 5 February 2025 says the same of the same picture, so the caption follows those words. It has been on the listing since October 2024. Before that the listing showed a photograph of seed, which RSC's post of 14 February 2023 calls "seeds of the new accession"; it is not on the listing now and is not used. The person beside the measuring pole is cut off at the edge of the picture.

USDA genebank accession

The U.S. National Plant Germplasm System holds Mazar-i-Sharif #2 seed as G 33741 (GRIN-Global entry), received on 22 August 2023 in a donation from Angus. The infobox lists it as the same lot as this accession:

  • the entry is named Mazar-i-Sharif #2, is dated collected before 2023 in Afghanistan, and its point lies in Balkh Province;
  • every archived version of the listing, from March 2023 to May 2026, sells the same 2022 lot, and RSC lists no other.

The entry's passport refers to G 33740 (Mazar-i-Sharif), the reproduction of the 2007 seed, for the donor's account; that account concerns the 2007 seed and is not used here. The entry carries a curator's note from the 2024 field trial in New York, "Very late flowering"; the article does not report it.
