Thai cabinet approves a bill restricting cannabis and cannabis extract to medical use

The Bangkok Post and Thai PBS World reported that Thailand's cabinet approved a cannabis control bill on 22 September 2026, restricting cannabis and cannabis extract to medical treatment by medical professionals and to research. Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat said the measure was intended so that cannabis would be used for medicinal and health interest rather than for recreation. As reported, cultivation, production, import, export and sale would require three-year licences issued by the director-general of the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, and sales would be barred to people under 20 and to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
