Xinjiang police seize 4,848 kg of cannabis resin and 67.5 kg of heroin concealed in shipping-container fibreboard, Urumqi

Xinjiang police reported recovering 4,848 kg of cannabis resin and 67.5 kg of heroin from the interlayers of fibreboard panels shipped in a container, after an overnight sorting operation that began on the night of 29 October. The consignment had been dispatched on 15 September 2007 and routed through Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and the Alashankou crossing. Police said the organiser, an Afghan national, was arrested at Beijing Capital International Airport on 6 March 2008. The regional narcotics corps described it as the largest single-case drug seizure by quantity in the province since the national anti-drug drive began. Two official accounts of the case differ on detail, one giving 310 fibreboard panels and cannabis resin, the other 313 panels and unqualified cannabis.
