Maxwell 97-798 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Pah Dang, a red Lahu village in Geut Chang subdistrict, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, on 30 July 1997 by J.F. Maxwell. Naturalis holds the sheet as L.1592611, barcode L 0736672,[1] and the Arnold Arboretum herbarium holds a duplicate as A 01564234.[2] It is the female plant of the planting whose male is Maxwell 97-797.
Collection and locality
The typed label is that of the CMU Herbarium, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University and is stamped INTRODUCED & CULTIVATED. It gives the province as CHIANG MAI, the district as Mae Dtang, the location as Doi Sahng Liang, south side, upper Gu Gahp Valley near Pah Dang (red Lahu) Village; Geut Chang Subdistrict, the elevation as 1125 m and the date as 30 July 1997.[3]
Recorded local name and use
The label gives the common name as gun cha and the people as red Lahu, and its notes end leaves smoked for a narcotic effect.[3]
Cultivation observation
The label gives the habitat as open field, planted among corn; degraded, seasonal, primary evergreen hardwood + bamboo forest; limestone bedrock.[3][4]
Specimen and identification
The notes describe an erect, branching, annual herb 1 m tall, basal diameter 12 mm, with an epidermis thin, smooth and with white pustular-lenticels at the base, green, female perianth green, stigmas/styles white and blade segments 1-5, dull dark green above, dull light green underneath. The sex sign ♀ is drawn at the head of the label, which names the family CANNABIDACEAE and the plant Cannabis sativa L., and records three duplicates.[3] Naturalis publishes the sheet image under a CC0 dedication.[1]
