Maxwell 97-797 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected near Pah Dang, a red Lahu village in Geut Chang subdistrict, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, on 30 July 1997 by J.F. Maxwell. The California Academy of Sciences holds a sheet as catalogue 1781016, published by GBIF as preserved specimen occurrence 6408927556.[1] The Forest Herbarium (BKF) in Bangkok holds a duplicate as accession BKF 121956, barcode SN 118283.[2]
Collection and locality
Both sheets carry the typed label Flora of Thailand, CMU Herbarium, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University, stamped Introduced & cultivated and marked with the male sign.[3][4] It gives the province as Chiang Mai and the district as Mae Dtang. It gives the location as Doi Sahng Liang, south side, upper Gu Gahp Valley near Pah Dang (red Lahu) Village; Geut Chang Subdistrict. It gives the elevation as 1125 m and the date as 30 July 1997.[3]
Cultivation observation
The label gives the habitat as open field, planted among corn; degraded, seasonal, primary evergreen hardwood + bamboo forest; limestone bedrock. It notes that the plant is native to central Asia.[3]
Specimen and identification
The notes describe a branching herb 2 m tall with a basal diameter of 18 mm and male inflorescences. They give the colours of its stem, bracts, tepals and anthers.[3] The label names the family Cannabidaceae and the plant Cannabis sativa L. It records five duplicates. A common name is typed over the printed caption and is not legible with confidence.[3] The catalogues record the plant as Cannabis sativa L.[1][2] Maxwell 88-1359 is an earlier cannabis gathering by the same collector.
