Maxwell 88-1359 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected in the Sisangwan Valley on the south-west side of Doi Suthep, Hang Dong District, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, on 26 November 1988 by J.F. Maxwell. The California Academy of Sciences holds a sheet as catalogue 1781017, published by GBIF as preserved specimen occurrence 6408925513.[1] The California Botanic Garden holds a duplicate as catalogue RSA0126608.[2]
Collection and locality
The typed label is headed Flora of Thailand and Herbarium, Faculty of Pharmacy, Chiang Mai University. It is stamped Cultivated & introduced.[3] It gives the province as Chiang Mai, the district as Hang Dong, the location as Doi Sutep, SW. side, Sisangwan Valley, the elevation as 850 m and the date as 26 November 1988.[3] The Academy's catalogue gives the district as Kong Dong.[1]
Recorded local name and use
The label gives the common name as gun cha. Its notes end native to central Asia; cultivated for smoking the leaves, narcotic.[3]
Cultivation observation
The label gives the habitat as open field in the primary evergreen forest, granite bedrock.[3]
Specimen and identification
The notes describe an erect, branching herb up to 2 m tall, with branchlets and petioles dull purplish, older branches more greenish, bracts and achenes green and leaflets dark green above, light green underneath.[3] The Academy's sheet holds a whole fruiting plant with its root. The label names the family Cannabinaceae and the plant Cannabis sativa L. It records three duplicates.[3] The catalogues record the plant as Cannabis sativa L.[1][2]
