Maxwell 93-943 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected in a home garden near Ban Bah Gluay, in Awp Luang National Park, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, on 21 August 1993 by J.F. Maxwell. Naturalis holds the sheet as L.1592610, barcode L 0736673,[1] and the Arnold Arboretum herbarium holds a duplicate as A 01564233.[2] The label records the plant as cultivated for spice as well as smoked.
Collection and locality
The typed label is that of the CMU Herbarium, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University and is stamped INTRODUCED & CULTIVATED. It gives the province as CHIANG MAI, the district as Jawm Teng, the location as Mae Sei Ridge, Mae Sei Subdistrict, Awp Luang National Park, near Ban Bah Gluay (M[o]ng Village), the elevation as 1450 m and the date as 21 August 1993.[3] Harvard's catalogue entry for the duplicate reads the village as Meng Village.[2]
Recorded use
The label's notes end cultivated for spice, also smoked for narcotic effect.[3]
Cultivation observation
The label gives the habitat as open, cleard area, home garden; mixed pine + evergreen hardwood forest, granite bedrock; settlement area.[3][4]
Specimen and identification
The notes describe a robust branching herb 2 m tall, basal diameter 3 cm, with bark thin, very finely roughened, green and tan, branchlets, female perianth green, stigmas/styles light green and leaflets dark green above, light green underneath. The sex sign ♀ is drawn at the head of the label, which names the family Cannab[in]aceae and the plant Cannabis sativa L., and records two duplicates.[3] Naturalis publishes the sheet image under a CC0 dedication.[1] Maxwell 97-798 and Maxwell 97-797 are later cannabis gatherings by the same collector.
