Evidentiary scope
The label is stamped Cultivated & introduced. The stamp records that the species is not native; it does not say where the seed came from. The label gives the common name as gun cha (the local name) and the habitat as open field in the primary evergreen forest, granite bedrock, and its notes end native to central Asia; cultivated for smoking the leaves, narcotic. The note does not say where the seed came from either. The plant was gathered in the Sisangwan Valley on the south-west side of Doi Suthep, at 850 m, on 26 November 1988. Seed of drug-type cannabis from elsewhere reached Thailand in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so the date of this sheet does not exclude introduced seed. The class rests on the label: cultivation in an open field for smoking the leaves, under a local name. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Georeferencing
The label names the Sisangwan Valley on Doi Suthep, in Hang Dong District, and no collection point within it. The district is georeferenced rather than declined: the infobox holds 18.72, 98.90, the point OpenStreetMap gives for the administrative area of Hang Dong District. It is an area point for the district, not a collection point, and it places the gathering only to within about 25 km. The district point stands at 376 m, well below the label's 850 m, which is expected: the label's ground lies in the hills and the district point does not stand for it. This supersedes the refusal recorded here earlier, which declined a point.
Editorial treatment
The accession is filed under the Academy's sheet, which carries the full label and is published under CC0. The California Botanic Garden's sheet is a duplicate; its catalogue data are published under a non-commercial licence and are cited, not reproduced.
The label spells the mountain Doi Sutep; the article links the usual spelling, Doi Suthep. The collector field uses the label form J.F. Maxwell. The local name field holds the label's common name as written.
Source discrepancies
- The Academy's catalogue gives the district as Kong Dong. The label reads Hang Dong, which the article and the district field follow.
