Mardochée s.n., Ida Ouchemlal is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from south-western Morocco, labelled as cultivated in the district of Ida Ouchemlal and dated 1875. It was collected by the rabbi Mardochée Abi Serour, who gathered plants in southern Morocco for the botanist Ernest Cosson. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the gathering on two sheets, P06886054 and P06886059.[1][2]
Collection and locality
Both sheets carry a handwritten label with the same wording: Cannabis sativa L., Cult. Ida Ouchemlal., Sud-Ouest du Maroc., Mardochée and 1875.[3][4] Cult. marks the plant as cultivated. The catalogue transcribes the place as Ida Ouchamlal on one sheet and Ida Ouchembal on the other, notes both as cultivated and holds the date as the whole year 1875.[1][2]
Cosson spells the place Ida-Ouchemlal and describes it as a mountainous district of south-western Morocco, south of Agadir and north-east of the district of Tazeroualt.[5]: 159 The infobox identifies it with the Ida ou Semlal, whom A. Le Chatelier described in 1891 as a large confederation holding the mountains above the middle course of the Oued Tazeroualt, where the tribe's main farmland lay.[6]: 43, 46
The collector
Cosson's history of the botanical exploration of Morocco, published in 1881, describes le rabbin Mardochée, Mardochée Abi Serour, as a Jew from Akka, the first Saharan oasis south-east of Agadir. Cosson paid for his explorations, with the help of the Société de géographie.[5]: 66 In January 1875 Mardochée returned to Agadir, and he spent the spring and part of the summer on a journey from Mogador to the Djebel Tabayoult. Cosson lists the places on the route, among them le district d'Ida-Ouchemlal.[5]: 67 He also records that Mardochée's collections ne portent malheureusement pas de dates de récolte (unfortunately bear no dates of collection).[5]: 67 Mardochée died at Algiers on 6 April 1886.[7]
Specimen and identification
P06886054 holds a large, densely leafy plant with its root and carries a printed label of the herbarium of E. Cosson, HERB. E. COSSON.[3] P06886059 holds a whole plant with its root and carries a printed label of the Paris museum herbarium, HERB. MUS. PARIS.[4] Cosson's herbarium was offered to the Muséum by his grandson at the end of 1903.[8] The catalogue records the name on both sheets as Cannabis sativa L., with no determiner named, and publishes their images under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.[1][2]
