Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label states cultivation: Cult. Ida Ouchemlal. That places the plant in a grower's hands in the district of Ida-Ouchemlal in the 1870s. It does not say who grew it, for what use, from what seed or on what scale, and it names no variety and no local name. The accession is classified Other: cultivation establishes a crop, not a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.
Le Chatelier's account of the tribe's farmland is context for the district, not evidence about this plant; no source read for this page mentions cannabis among the Ida ou Semlal. No text by Cosson seen for this page lists Cannabis from Mardochée's collections: Gallica's searchable Cosson volumes (the Illustrationes florae atlanticae) give no hit, and his 1875 Index plantarum in imperio Maroccano australi (Bulletin de la Société botanique de France 22), which covers Mardochée's earlier harvests at Akka, could not be read.
Label reading
- P06886054 (read from the museum's scan, 3176 × 5038 pixels). Handwritten label: Cannabis sativa L. / Cult. Ida Ouchemlal. / Sud-Ouest du Maroc. / Mardochée … 1875. Printed label at the upper right: HERB. E. COSSON.
- P06886059 (read from the museum's scan, 3352 × 5048 pixels). Handwritten label with the same wording: Cannabis sativa L. / cult. Ida Ouchemlal / Sud-Ouest du Maroc. / Mardochée … 1875. Printed label at the lower right: HERB. MUS. PARIS. with Cannabis sativa L. in manuscript.
- Both labels read Ouchemlal, which is also Cosson's spelling. The two are written in similar but not identical hands (one begins Cult., the other cult.); whose hands they are has not been established.
Georeferencing
The label names a district, and Cosson describes Ida-Ouchemlal as a mountainous district south of Agadir and north-east of Tazeroualt. The infobox locality, Ida Ou Semlal, is an identification: the two names share the Ida ou prefix and differ by an s/ch that varies in French transcriptions of the period, and both sources place the district by the Tazeroualt. No source read for this page equates them in so many words.
Wikidata (item Q86734497, a tribal area) carries a GeoNames point for the Ida ou Semlal at 29.61, −9.20, which lies in present-day Tiznit Province, in the Souss-Massa region. A tribal territory has no single point, and the identification above is an inference, so no coordinate and no province are asserted.
Editorial treatment
One accession, two sheets. The two sheets carry the same label wording, the same collector and the same year, so they are treated as one gathering. The accession is filed under P06886054, which carries the fuller labelling (the Cosson herbarium label as well as the collection label).
Date. The infobox stores the label's year, 1875, and the title uses it. Cosson states that Mardochée's collections bear no dates of collection, so the year on the label was probably assigned from the journey and not recorded in the field. Cosson's journey of spring and summer 1875 passed through Ida-Ouchemlal. His Illustrationes florae atlanticae cite some Ida-Ouchemlal gatherings of Mardochée as [1875-1876] or [1876], and the Paris catalogue dates most Ida-Ouchemlal specimens to 1876; neither bears on these two sheets, which say 1875.
Collector. The collector field takes the label's Mardochée. The prose gives Cosson's form of the full name, Mardochée Abi Serour; Sémach (1928) writes Aby Serour.
Source discrepancies
- Place-name. The label reads Ouchemlal; the catalogue transcribes Ouchamlal (P06886054) and Ouchembal (P06886059).
- Birth year. Sémach (1928) says Mardochée was born at Akka vers 1830; the Bibliothèque nationale de France catalogue gives 1826–1886 (Oliel, 1998). The article gives only the date of death, on which the sources agree.
- Collecting years. Maire (1931) gives 1872, 1873 and 1875; Cosson's Illustrationes bracket some Ida-Ouchemlal gatherings [1876]. The sheets say 1875.
