Licent 886 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected from cultivation at Cheou-yang (Shouyang), in central Shanxi, China, on 4 October 1914 by the Jesuit R. P. Licent. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds a sheet as P06884301,[1] and the Tianjin Natural History Museum in Tianjin a second as TIE 00004144.[2]
Collection and locality
Licent's label reads 886, Shansi central, Cheouyang W. and 4 X '14, with the faint oval stamp of his museum at Tientsin. The museum label reads Cannabis sativa L., det. Handel-Mazzetti 1928 and R. P. Licent. Chine septentrionale. Reçu le 24 Août 1922.[3] The Tianjin sheet carries a slip in pencil, Chanvre – Cheou-yang-shien – Cultivé – 4.X.14: hemp, cultivated. The museum's printed Herbier form on it is completed with the number 886 and Cannabis sativa L., and, typed, Shansi, Cheouyang W and 4.X.14.[4] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a stem ending in a leafy top of crowded, crumpled leaves.[3] The museum label names the plant Cannabis sativa L., determined by Handel-Mazzetti in 1928; the catalogue records Cannabis sativa L.[3][1] The Tianjin sheet carries a large fruiting top, the achenes visible, with narrow leaflets.[4] Licent's gathering by the railway at Makiapou that July is Licent 231 (1914).
